JOSH ROTHMAN
Josh was an outstanding three sport star and a two-way starter at defensive back and wide receiver for the Vikings from 2007 to 2008. In his senior season he was selected Robbie Beathard's Chief of Staff and second in command of the Viking's Star Chamber and was selected designated a training group leader. In his first season of varsity competition Josh made significant contributions on both sides of the line of scrimmage. He started the season as a wide receiver but was soon asked to move into the Viking secondary although he had no prior experience playing cornerback. Learning the position under game conditions Josh moved into the line-up in the third game of the season and was able to solidify the play of the Viking secondary with his effective play at the corner position. Josh ended his junior year with 77 total defensive points. He was in on 24 tackles, made one break up and led the defense with a team high three interceptions. On the offensive side of the ball Josh caught nine passes for 149 yards, scored one touchdown and averaged 16.6 yards per reception. Josh also played an important role on the Viking special teams returning four kickoffs for 111 yards and averaged 27.8 yards per return. In addition to his excellent play on the field in 2007 Josh was also a very accomplished student and his 4.33 GPA earned him recognition on the San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic Team . Josh followed up his junior year with an outstanding senior year that included major contributions on both the defensive and offensive side of the ball. Playing safety for the first time Josh recorded 38 tackles including 26 solo stops. He made eight break ups, one interception and returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown against University City. He earned Special Teams Player of the Game Honors against San Diego High School and was also selected Defensive Player of the Game for his efforts against Lincoln High School and University City High School. On the offensive side of the ball Josh caught 19 passes for 315 yards and caught three touchdown passes. Josh was also a standout special teams player and punt returner. In 2008 he returned 12 punts for 222 yards averaging 18.5 yards per return. His senior year performance earned him 2nd Team All Western League honors. Josh was also voted Team Captain and was awarded the 2008 Defensive Coaches Award for his special contributions to Viking football. His 4.17 GPA once again earned him recognition on the San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic Team. He was also a 2008 Honorable Mention National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete and was awarded the 2009 Gene Edwards Memorial Scholarship which is given annually in memory of La Jolla High School's legendary former head coach. Josh finished his Viking career with 206 total defensive points. He recorded 62 total tackles and was in on 43 solo stops. He also had nine career break ups and made four interceptions. His four career interceptions ranks 6th all-time in the La Jolla record book. On offense Josh finished his career with 28 total receptions for 464 total yards and averaged 16.5 yards per receptions. His 28 catches ranks 8th all-time for career receptions. He also returned 18 kickoffs for 491 yards and averaged 27.2 yards per return. In addition he returned 14 punts for 224 yards and averaged 16 yards per return. In all Josh accumulated 1,179 yards of total yardage and scored 30 total points. In addition to his on the field accomplishments Josh distinguished himself by unselfishly by performing community service work through the Jewish Family Service's Hand Up Youth Food Pantry Program. Josh is a special individual who recognizes that individuals must give back to the community in order to give thanks for all the blessings that God sends our way throughout our lifetime. Josh will continue his education and football career at Pomona College where he will continue to carry on the long tradition of outstanding free safeties that have left their mark in the Star Chamber and have gone on to represent their high schools, families and friends with class and excellence.
