Dear Ken,

As you probably know, in 1999 I started a group known as the Star Chamber. The group was composed of selected individuals who I wanted to assume leadership roles on our team. Not everything went as planned, but I still feel it was a positive experience. This coming season I will be reworking the structure of the Star Chamber and I am going to make it a group (DB) project. Positive leadership will still be our main focus and it will be the group’s goal to carry out these responsibilities.

I am writing to you to first of all extend a special invitation to be part of the group. Sometimes players who aren’t part of the starting unit feel that maybe they aren’t as important as the others. This is not true. I consider you a very special part of my D.B’s. I remember last season how frustrated you were when you didn’t feel that you were making any progress. I very much admired the fact that although you weren’t playing much, you still cared enough to want to keep getting better. Many of your teammates can learn an important lesson from you. It is this type of dedication that will allow you to become a better ball player. It is true that we have an experienced group of DB’s coming back, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t play an increased role in our group next season. Just work hard and I promise you that I’ll do my best to make you a better ball player.

I’m adding you as an active member of the Star Chamber. Visit our website and take a look at the special responsibilities. These are the things that I feel can make you a complete ball player. I am enclosing a goalsheet along with a copy of last year’s goals. I want you to take some time to think over what you would like to accomplish next season. Please fill it out and send it back to me. I’ll review it and make any changes that I feel are in your best interests. If you need to talk feel free to call me at any time. My home number is 619-281-5092.

Coach

P.S. I hope you are not spending too much time in La Mesa!
