Dear Mike,

I am enclosing an article about speed training that I think will be helpful. We don’t have an electronic timer, but you can do most of what is in the program. You told me that you want to run a 4.4 and I believe that you will someday do that. All you need to do is work at it and be determined.

Mike, I believe your mom sent some film to Cal Poly earlier this year. Let me know if she did and if she remembers the name of the coach who she sent it to. I will send your tape there after you let me know. I’ll get together with you before you go to Texas, hopefully I’ll have a better idea of what to expect when you get there. I know this recruiting process has been a disappointment for both of us. Sometimes I can’t figure out what these coaches are thinking. I am convinced that coaches on the collegiate level get fired not because they can’t coach, they get fired because they can’t recruit. But, I guess you can look at it this way. For some reason most of my kids are either very lightly recruited or not recruited at all. However, the ones that do decide to continue playing play very well. So I guess if you were being heavily recruited you wouldn’t be one of my kids!

You are going to be a great college football player and don’t let anyone tell you differently. If you decide that you want the challenge of Division I football we will find a good place to walk on. Colorado State’s offensive coordinator told me that they decided to offer an in-state safety a scholarship. They had you on their board and liked you but offering an in-state player makes more economic sense. I understand, but they made a big mistake. He asked me what you were going to do and I told them that I was going to call Arizona and ask them to let you walk-on there (where you will become All Pac-10 player). Of course he asked me if I would allow him to have a chance to speak to you about walking on at their place. You see, he liked you a lot but they weren’t recruiting freshman receivers. Bad timing, but God has a way of planning things for us and sometimes we have to take the bumpier road. So don’t get discouraged because you are going in the right direction.

I very much enjoyed having dinner with all of you last Tuesday. It was good to get all of you together one more time. I’ll keep in touch.

Coach

P.S. This letter is an official Star Chamber communication and will become part of your record on the website. The Chamber is now officially a DB website and you will become an alumni member. Later on I will move you into the Gallery of Stars!
